Often this is not discovered until after the home owner has hired the contractor and the walls, floors and ceiling have been removed. This is a nightmare scenario for many home owners. Their contractor will tell them that the upgrades will be well in excess of the original estimate. And most contractors do not have the skill or the motivation to warn you of potential problems before you hire them. They are understandably only concerned with getting the job. They don’t want to scare you away with the possibility of hidden expenses.

So how do know if the home you want to buy can be remodeled without any ugly surprises? You will experience a dusty environment no matter how clean you or your contractor is. It will be dusty and at times downright dirty. Can you live with this?

Not all remodelers are created equal. Some are con artists. Some are just real slow. Some are very messy. Some do a poor job. And the ones that do everything right are very expensive because they need to be. So there is no escape from these hard truths. The buyer must beware and you get what you pay for. Sorry, no exceptions.

Do you have good relationship skills? You need to be honest with yourself about this one. If you are married, a remodeling project can test the best relationships. And if you are hiring contractors, you need to be able to communicate with them during times of stress that are inevitable. If you are not good with people, then a remodeling project is not for you. Narrow your home buying choices to newer homes that will require less work.

Utility costs can be much higher in an older home. Here’s why.

Older homes were not built with the same modern materials and building techniques that modern homes employ. They retain heat less efficiently and sometimes completely lack insulation altogether. Often older furnaces can be inefficient and consume a great deal of fuel and as a result cost more to heat. Older windows can be very drafty and they often lack the thermal insulating characteristics of a modern window. Between all of these considerations you can expect to pay higher heating and cooling bills. And in time you may need to add insulation like retro-foam that fills empty wall cavities. This can be very expensive. You will also need to upgrade the appliances as well. Will you need a new furnace and water heater before long? Will you save money by purchasing a new furnace right away? Is the water heater old and inefficient? Get these questions answered before you sign the purchase agreement.

Traffic Management How To Pass and Be Passed by Hooked On Driving

The key to you having a great time out on the track is your ability to manage yourself and while trap rules are followed and patience and courtesy used in your session. You’re going to have a blast out there, but there may be times where stretching the rules can spoil it for an entire group. In all cases, if you ever see unsafe activity on a track, it is your responsibility to report it to the group leader immediately. Here are some fundamental rules to follow when you’re driving on the track. Remember that with any track day, the run groupings are done to try to match the pace of many different cars, natural variations and levels of experience and talent, cars, speed, potential, and modifications to some cars make an even playing field pretty impossible.

Most clubs provide safe passage zones, while some allow more open passing with points. Here’s the first rule. You must know the passing rules for your club and your run group. Many times there are different rules for different groups. This is an important reason for you to always attend any group meetings. They may be changing the rules on you and you need to know them. Number two, be aware. Watch your mirrors and open up your vision ahead to include the flag stations. Don’t overreact to situations that occur, and drive predictably. The third rule is to never hold up traffic. You may be driving a high horsepower, very capable car, but just learning a new track. If there’s a car that normally would be slower than yours, as consistently following you, they are quicker. Keep in mind that the driver may be on the track for the hundredth time and has sticky tires. You would have to let them pass by to lifting off the throttle in a passing zone to allow them to get by.

If you have several cars behind you, consider using a hot pit lane to exit, letting the traffic pass and proceed. If you scare yourself by cutting a pass to close, you’ll be black flagged and asked to refrain from doing that again. The fifth rule is to be patient. When you think you’re faster than someone ahead of you, do not climb up their rear bumper and push them. They will be distracted and want you to pass them in an inappropriate place. When preparing to pass, don’t try to slingshot or anticipate a passing signal. Stay within two to four car lengths to accomplish the past and then be ready to carry speed to make the past but never commit to the past until all is clear.

The final rule is to offer wave buys. Many clouds require wave buys before passes to be completed, even if they’re not required. We think they’re a good idea to eliminate doubt and establish communication between the passer and the passey. When a track session runs with 30 drivers who are aware of the track situation at all times, it looks like a machine out there. Any car pushing the envelope usually stands out and your club will correct their behavior as quickly as they can. Safety in the end, is determined by you, the drivers at the event. The bottom line here is to use clear judgment and to remember that this is not a competition and that it’s okay to not be the quickest on the track. If you want to run with some friends, that’s great. Just use common sense and courtesy while following the rules.

How to Know When to Replace a Fan Thermostat

Hello, my name is Tom Burns a certified auto mechanic from Redding, Pennsylvania. Today we’re going to talk about how to know when to replace a fan thermostat. There’s either a thermostat that controls the flow through the engine or a coolant sensor that will turn on an electric fan. There are a couple of bolts, two-three hoses. It’s not too difficult to change as you see if you have an electric fan. It is computer controlled, it works off of a sensor, usually close to the thermostat housing or on the side of the radiator. You’ll have to check a repair manual to see where the location is or a competent part store locally can tell you what it looks like and show it to you.

They might even tell you where it is. For this particular vehicle, you will need a three-quarter socket and a ratchet extension. Disconnect your connector on it. Pull it right out. You might want to relieve the pressure in your radiator cap right here first. Make sure the engine is not hot before you start this process. Fill it out that you knew one screw right back in. Push connected back on. Fill it back up a corner to about 195 degrees, about 210 degrees. If it’s an electric fan, it will turn on under that and keep your hands away from the fan.

You don’t want to sit there trying to turn it thinking it does not work. When it heats up, it expands and locks that fan and starts turning it. So again, if you have a clutch fan, don’t put your hands in there cause you don’t know when it’s going to start turning. It will free spin until it gets up to temperature and it locks. Other than that, it’s really simple. You either have a manual fan or electric fan. It has a temperature sensor, works electronically through the computer. The thermostat is in this housing will simply change.

How to Diagnose a Bad Starter Motor

Imagine coming out to your car in the morning, turning the key while you’re all set to go to work and it doesn’t crank over. Nothing happens at all. We’ve got several possibilities that could cause a problem like that. One of the things that might be suspected is a bad starter motor, so we’re going to take a look at some of the procedures that would take place in order to determine if the starter motor itself is bad. The first thing we’re going to start by doing is making sure that the battery is good. We’re going to perform a load test on this battery by hooking up this volt amp tester to the battery hookup (which is very much like hooking up a set of jumper cables).

Then we can see that the battery is 12.5 volts, which is a good thing to start with. Based on the batteries, it’s at a 300 cold cranking APP rating. We’re going to adjust the load knob, which applies a load much like a starter would up to 300 apps. Then we’re going to see if they can keep the voltage up. We do this for 15 seconds. At the end of the 15 seconds, it is still over 9.6 volts. This battery should have a sufficient capacity in order to start this vehicle. So the battery’s not the problem.

What Is the Function of a Car Radiator

Hi, my name is Mark Blocker. In this segment, we’re going to cover what is the function of the automotive radiator. The function of automotive radiators to cool the engine. The radiators mount in the front of the vehicle and it holds, and cools the liquid from the engine.

The upper hose is used for an inlet where the water trickles down through small tubes. The tubes are connected with fins as the air from driving the vehicle passes through a raid year that cools the liquid coming from the engine. Then the liquid is drawn in through the bottom radiator hose through the engine. That’s how the engine’s coolant. The purpose of the automotive radiator is to cool the engine and it does so by using cooling fins.

The movement of the air through the vehicle itself or with the additional use of electric fans are mounted behind the radiator and are used for pulling air through the radio.

Jump-Starting Your Car Battery

A dead car battery never happens at a good time, but fortunately a quick jumpstart can bring the battery back to life and bring you on your way. It’s important to jumpstart the battery in the correct way, and we’ll show you how. We suggest you always have a set of jumper cables in your car in case of a battery failure. Use caution when working with automotive batteries. Always wear safety glasses and work in a well ventilated area. The first thing you want to do is park the working vehicle near the car. That needs to be jumped, but don’t let them touch if possible. Position the car’s nose to nose about 18 inches apart. Next, shut off the ignition on both cars and remove the keys. Be sure to turn off the lights, radio, and other accessories that will drain power to begin. Connect the red or positive jumper cable clamp to the dead batteries.

You will see a plus on the battery near this post. Now that you have the jumper cable connected to the battery, do not touch the metal portion of the jumper cable clamps to each other or any part of the car except the proper battery terminal. After connecting the red clamp to the positive post of the dead battery, connect to the other red or positive clamp to the positive post of the good battery. Now connect the black clamp to the negative post of the working vehicles battery. Make sure all clamps are secure before making the final connection. Finally, secure the black plant to any unpainted metal surface of the engine of the dead car. Do not clamp to the battery post. Do a final check to make sure all cables are set and make sure everyone is clear of the engines. Now start the working car.

For a few minutes, charge the dead battery revs the engine slightly by pressing on the gas pedal lightly. After a few minutes, turn the ignition and the dead car. Let both cars idle for a few minutes. Once the debt cars running smoothly, disconnect the battery jumper cable in the reverse order. First, disconnect the black or negative cable from the negative post of the good battery. Remove the positive or red clamp from the good battery and finally remove the red plant from the previously dead battery. Now you can drive your car. Be sure to go to safe area before turning it off.
