Hello, my name is Tom Burns a certified auto mechanic from Redding, Pennsylvania. Today we’re going to talk about how to know when to replace a fan thermostat. There’s either a thermostat that controls the flow through the engine or a coolant sensor that will turn on an electric fan. There are a couple of bolts, two-three hoses. It’s not too difficult to change as you see if you have an electric fan. It is computer controlled, it works off of a sensor, usually close to the thermostat housing or on the side of the radiator. You’ll have to check a repair manual to see where the location is or a competent part store locally can tell you what it looks like and show it to you.
They might even tell you where it is. For this particular vehicle, you will need a three-quarter socket and a ratchet extension. Disconnect your connector on it. Pull it right out. You might want to relieve the pressure in your radiator cap right here first. Make sure the engine is not hot before you start this process. Fill it out that you knew one screw right back in. Push connected back on. Fill it back up a corner to about 195 degrees, about 210 degrees. If it’s an electric fan, it will turn on under that and keep your hands away from the fan.
You don’t want to sit there trying to turn it thinking it does not work. When it heats up, it expands and locks that fan and starts turning it. So again, if you have a clutch fan, don’t put your hands in there cause you don’t know when it’s going to start turning. It will free spin until it gets up to temperature and it locks. Other than that, it’s really simple. You either have a manual fan or electric fan. It has a temperature sensor, works electronically through the computer. The thermostat is in this housing will simply change.
Imagine coming out to your car in the morning, turning the key while you’re all set to go to work and it doesn’t crank over. Nothing happens at all. We’ve got several possibilities that could cause a problem like that. One of the things that might be suspected is a bad starter motor, so we’re going to take a look at some of the procedures that would take place in order to determine if the starter motor itself is bad. The first thing we’re going to start by doing is making sure that the battery is good. We’re going to perform a load test on this battery by hooking up this volt amp tester to the battery hookup (which is very much like hooking up a set of jumper cables).
Then we can see that the battery is 12.5 volts, which is a good thing to start with. Based on the batteries, it’s at a 300 cold cranking APP rating. We’re going to adjust the load knob, which applies a load much like a starter would up to 300 apps. Then we’re going to see if they can keep the voltage up. We do this for 15 seconds. At the end of the 15 seconds, it is still over 9.6 volts. This battery should have a sufficient capacity in order to start this vehicle. So the battery’s not the problem.

That needs to be jumped, but don’t let them touch if possible. Position the car’s nose to nose about 18 inches apart. Next, shut off the ignition on both cars and remove the keys. Be sure to turn off the lights, radio, and other accessories that will drain power to begin. Connect the red or positive jumper cable clamp to the dead batteries.
You will see a plus on the battery near this post. Now that you have the jumper cable connected to the battery, do not touch the metal portion of the jumper cable clamps to each other or any part of the car except the proper battery terminal. After connecting the red clamp to the positive post of the dead battery, connect to the other red or positive clamp to the positive post of the good battery. Now connect the black clamp to the negative post of the working vehicles battery. Make sure all clamps are secure before making the final connection. Finally, secure the black plant to any unpainted metal surface of the engine of the dead car. Do not clamp to the battery post. Do a final check to make sure all cables are set and make sure everyone is clear of the engines. Now start the working car.
For a few minutes, charge the dead battery revs the engine slightly by pressing on the gas pedal lightly. After a few minutes, turn the ignition and the dead car. Let both cars idle for a few minutes. Once the debt cars running smoothly, disconnect the battery jumper cable in the reverse order. First, disconnect the black or negative cable from the negative post of the good battery. Remove the positive or red clamp from the good battery and finally remove the red plant from the previously dead battery. Now you can drive your car. Be sure to go to safe area before turning it off.
